About the Artist:  Sammy  Britt  (contemp)  Studied at Memphis Academy of Arts (BA, painting), University of Mississippi (MFA, painting) and with Henry Hensche at the Cape School of Art (1963).  He has won many prizes and awards and has served as juror in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama. He was honored by Lauren Rogers Museum of Art in Laurel, Mississippi and participated in the "A Painter's Painter: Charles Webster Hawthorne; The Influence of Provincetown and Henry Hensche on Sammy Britt, Gerald DeLoach, Richard Kelso, and George T. Thurmond Exhibition" in 1999. He received the Kossman Outstanding Teacher Award at Delta State University in 2002 and was also awarded Professor Emeritus of Art, 2002. He was featured on Mississippi Educational Television, is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa Honorary Leadership Fraternity, was chosen one of the Outstanding Educators in America and is listed in Who's Who in American Art. He has taught workshops throughout Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee in the tradition of Henry Hensche.

About the Artist:  George Elmer Browne  (1871-1946)  Studied at Boston Museum of Fine Art School under Frank Benson, Edmund Tarbell, Cowles School of Art (Boston), Academie Julian, Paris with Jules Lefebvre and Tony Robert-Fleury.  In 1895, he received the first of many prizes at the Mechanics Fair.  He also exhibited at the Salmagundi Club, (prizes) 1895, 1901, 1915, 1917, 1919, 1920, 1921, 1927, 1932, 1936; Art Institute of Chicago, 1923 (prize); Allied American Artists, (gold prizes) 1928, 1934; National Academy of Design, 1934 (prize); American Water Color Society, 1936 (prize) and had a retrospective at the Knoedler’s Gallery in 1917.  Collections include the Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio; the Chicago Art Institute; the Montclair Art Museum, New Jersey; the National Academy of Design, New York; the New York Public Library; the Lotos Club, New York; the High Museum, Atlanta, Georgia; the Museé Montpellier, Paris; the Hotel de Ville, Cahors, France; and in many other public and private collections. His painting “Bait Sellers of Cape Cod” was purchased by the French government out of the Paris Salon of 1904.  The artist was later made an Officer de l'Instruction Publique et des Beaux Arts (1925) and a Knight of the Legion of Honor (1936).

Exhibitions and awards include Art Academy of Petaluma, Silver Lake Gallery, Paint Annapolis (2009 the Best in Show), Portrait Society of America (2008 Certificate of Excellence), Paint Annapolis (2007 Second Place Ribbon), Maryland Public Television’s “Outdoors Maryland” (2003, Capital Region Emmy Award) and more. Awards and highlights of his career include 2004 Jack Richeson Silver Brush Award for Best Figure Painting awarded by Stephen Doherty, Editor in Chief of American Artist Magazine; and in segment “Shades of Winter”. The October 2010 issue of American Artist Magazine features a step-by-step portrait demo by John illustrating Michael Gormley’s article, “The Artists Colony.” In addition, John’s painting “Anna” was a Finalist in the 2010 July/August American Artist Magazine’s Cover Competition. Competing in 2009’s Paint Annapolis event in Annapolis, Maryland brought John the top honor of Best in Show awarded to “Chesapeake Girl” by juror Ken Backus. John was awarded the Certificate of Excellence by the Portrait Society of America at the 10th Anniversary Art of the Portrait Conference for his portrait, “MacKenzie” in April, 2008. Collections include The United States Naval Academy, The Federal Reserve Bank of MD, Lockheed-Martin Corporation, and the First Bank of Alabama.

About the Artist:  James  Hansen  (1951-1997) James Hansen came to Provincetown in the early 1980s and worked for several summers in a studio at the Fine Arts Work Center. During his years in Provincetown, he befriended many local artists, including sculptor Paul Bowen, and painters Claude Simard and Myriam Laplante. James died in 1997 at the age of 45. An instructor at Yale and Brandeis, he exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York City, the Alpha Gallery in Boston, the UFO and East End galleries in Provincetown, the Eva Cohen Gallery in Chicago and in numerous other locations across the U.S. His work is in permanent collections of the Boston Public Library, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University,  Cantor Art Gallery, Boston, Portland State Univ. and others. About the Artist:  Morgan  Norwood  (contemp)  Represented by Impulse Gallery (assemblages) and the Schoolhouse Gallery (laminated photos embedded into sandstone of her favorite gym bunnies - male/female) Her unique and extremely collectible works have been found in many prestigious collections and gardens. The most highly public piece being the chair at Clem and Ursie's on Shank painter Road. She also acclaimed fame in the press after constructing a permanent installation in the Seth Nickerson House (oldest house in Provincetown) utilizing artifacts found within the house's walls as the current owner renovated the property. It includes a small white door of illegal wood (Property of the King of England) from a clipper ship, and when opened, reveals a map of the cosmos and turns on a recording of a Provincetown trolley guide. The recorded voice tells of the previous artist/tenant, John W. Gregory when he operated his house as an informal museum.

Hawthorne’s summer classes at the Cape Cod School of Art.  Also with Cedric and Jeanette Egeli of Edgewater, Maryland.  For the last two years he has participated in the January  portrait workshop for advanced studies, held in Maryland, and has also participated in a two week summer course for outdoor portrait/figure classes offered at Cape Cod.  Memberships include: National Arts Club of New York City, Pastel Society of America, Society of American Impressionists, the Art Students League of  N.Y., and the International Society of Marine Painters.  The artist founded American Art Productions to expand an understanding of color as the essential element of impressionist painting.
