About the Artist:  Thomas  Eaton  (contemp)  Represented by the Star Gallery, Orleans. Known for fantasy, still life. “At a very early age Tom Eaton remembers becoming lost in the world of drawing and painting. To this day Tom can sit and sketch very ordinary things. Soon his imagination comes into play; defying gravity and the logic of reality, a surrealistic interpretation emerges. The viewer is engaged in emotional whimsy; one can look at a Tom Eaton work for hours only to see something new.”  Numerous collections throughout New England.

While attending school in Vancouver, he became interested in painting.  He studied Northwest Coast Design and Sculpture with Doug Cranmer and Henry Hunt, two of the foremost Kwakwaka’wakw artists of the 20th century.  His first carving was a miniature totem pole based on the pole his father carved to commemorate the visit of King George XI. He received several important commissions while still a young artist for the Cape Mudge museum and was among the youngest artists chosen for the Legacy Exhibition, hosted by the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria (1972). The exhibition traveled until 1982. He exhibited two works, a Noohmahl (fool dancer) and a Tuxw’id or Kominicka mask both carved in the powerful tradition of the War Spirit Ceremony.  He was chosen to carve the large four way split transformation mask for the Canadian Pavilion at Expo ‘86 in Vancouver, British Columbia, now in the collection of the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull, Quebec. He was also commissioned to carve a major eleven-figure pole by the City of Vancouver for Stanley Park.  In 1986, Beau completed a transformation mask in Vancouver for Expo, which is currently on display in the Canadian Museum of Civilization. The same year, he completed a totem pole for Stanley Park in Vancouver. His work can also be found in the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. He is an accomplished carver, storyteller and educator. He apprentices many of the young carvers, thus passing on the skills and knowledge he inherited from his father, Francis Dick. He still resides in Kingcome Village.
