Daniel McElwain  (20th/21rst century)
The following is copied from Falconer's online biography.
"
Falconer first came to Chatham in 1968. She had met her future gallery partner Daniel McElwain at an exhibition at Braintree Art Association. He painted in watercolors, she in oils. They had both been teaching art for a while in the Quincy/Braintree area and had a lot of demonstration paintings stacked up, and they mused about opening a studio/gallery where they could sell this work. “I had six cousins living on the Cape and I used to summer here when I was young,” she explained. “One of my cousins, Winifred Shepherd, opened a gift shop on Crowell Road and she asked me to bring down some paintings to sell in her shop. I told Dan, and he wanted to send his down too, so we came down to Chatham one day in early spring with our paintings and took a ride down Main Street. It was so quiet that day that Dan asked, ‘Does anyone ever come here?’ I assured him that in the summer, the tourists did come! During our trip down Main Street, I saw a For Rent sign at 587 Main Street, so we went in to see the realtor and decided to rent it for a studio/gallery. We decided to spend the summer in Chatham, painting. I rented a little cottage and moved down with my daughter Susan for the summer.”
